Beauty is in the Eye of the Storm
It’s hurricane season! Hurricane Hermine graced us with her presence a few days ago, which officially began Florida’s storm season.Growing up on an island, my native-Floridian mama was resilient in the face of storms. Hurricanes would blow through our sleepy town and she would board up and settle in. My mama always saw the beauty and energy that came within a powerful storm. As a hurricane approached, she would wait for the safest moment, load me in the car and head straight for the beach. Some of my most vivid childhood memories are sitting in the car with her during the eye of a hurricane and watching the waves of the sea crash against the dunes. Those moments, when we could have dwelled on the fear surrounding us, molded and shaped the way I viewed storms for the rest of my life.
The eye of a storm is the peaceful moment that reminds you it won’t last forever.
As Floridians, we spend most of the year talking about hurricane season. How bad will it be, will our house make it, what supplies should we stock up on, etc. We try to anticipate the storm’s path and where the most severe patches will hit. But very rarely, if ever, does anyone talk about the eye of the storm. We tend to overlook the simple fact that every hurricane has a break within it. Remember this, in the storms of your life there will be a break in severity, chaos and damage. And even if it picks back up again, you will have a brief window of time to remember what the stillness feels like.
“Sea storms are up, God, sea storms wild and roaring, Sea storms with thunderous breakers. Stronger than wild sea storms, Mightier than sea-storm breakers, Mighty God rules from High Heaven.” Psalm 93:3 MSG
God is our constant refuge. He is the eye of our storm. When the trials of life are violently attacking you, remember that He is your constant defender.
“’Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.” Matthew 8:26 NLT
Life can sometimes feel like a constant hurricane season, but you can change your perspective and seek the beauty that dwells in the midst of it! Rest in the knowledge that Jesus has the authority over the winds and the waves in your life. Even through the wildest of storms, we can turn our eyes to the One who commands the sea with His breath. He cradles the stars in one hand, while He holds you gently in the other. His beauty is the eye within our storms.
