How To Fall Away From God

Are you ready to fall away from God, go back to the world, and live a life centered on self-gratification – and the insatiable desire that accompanies it? It’s quite easy, really, if you follow these five easy steps! Now, let me step off of my fire and brimstone podium for a minute. I was being facetious - I’m not encouraging any of you to “fall away from God”. Rather, I intend to write this blog from a different perspective; we will look at actions that will separate us from God. This will in turn help us to avoid these actions so that we may grow closer to God. If you’re a rough-around-the-edges, barely-saved heathen like I am, you’ll get something out of it.1. Instead of daily devotionals, get on social media. The first step towards becoming a heathen is to pay attention to distractions instead of daily devotionals. If you’re ADD like I am, this is too easy. I’ll literally be a paragraph in to reading my bible, my phone will buzz, I’ll reply to the text, maybe check Instagram really quick so I can see what new selfies people are posting, then check on Florida Gators football news, and then my emails. After 30 minutes of that, my devotional time is up, and I’m off to start my day.

2. Stop talking to your mentors; all they do is call you out, which makes you realize you’re not perfect, and that maybe you need to change some things. If we’re going to follow God, we are going to have to cast off some of the things of this world. Casting off the world takes time, and sharpening from friends/mentors. Change is difficult, and so is accepting the truth that we aren’t perfect. It’s much easier, and preferable if our goal is to fall away from God, to write off those difficult talks.

3. Harbor bitterness towards your church, allow yourself to be offended easily. When you become bitter towards the church, you are less inclined to go, and when you do – you get less out of it. In order to fall away from God, you must first check out from church – some of the easiest ways to be bitter towards the church are “The church is always asking for my money”, or “somebody there offended me”, "The pastor at that church is too much like a celebrity", and my personal favorite “Their worship is like a concert, people are having too much fun.”

4. Speaking of “the church always wanting your money”, stop tithing. It’s hard to fall away from church when you’re being a generous giver. As God continually blesses you and your finances as a result of your tithing and giving, you will grow closer to Him. If the goal is to separate yourself from God, you must remove the blessing of being a cheerful giver from yourself. Only then can you achieve a proper financial struggle and fall away from God.

5. Fall victim to condemnation. So, if you’re rough around the edges like I am, you probably have some issues. You probably say some things outside of church that you shouldn’t, you might have “a few” (I’m being nice here) bad habits, or you are sometimes overly sarcastic and accidentally upset people (cough). Inevitably, a voice will creep in every now and then, and condemn you. Condemnation will lead to despair, and despair will lead to turning your back on God. To avoid falling victim to despair, it is best to have an understanding of the real nature of God, accept forgiveness, and focus on the positive in your life.

There you have it, five ways on “How To Fall Away From God”. I know I used a lot of sarcastic humor in this blog, but there are some serious principles in here, and I hope they were made readily apparent. My pray for all of us is that we all live extraordinary lives, walking side by side with God – and that when people see us, they see a man or woman that excels in everything, has balance, and is consistent. Have a great day!
