Hearing and Understanding the Voice of God [Podcast]
Years ago I was at a church service; the pastor challenged the congregation to listen to God for just a few minutes each day. I realized, hearing and understanding the voice of God was something I had been missing in my life. As a Christian, I knew I needed to change this. Hearing and understanding the voice of God is extremely important for all Christians. You all know me, I'm always practical with what I share. So I've broken this post down into three ways to begin hearing and understanding God's voice.
3 Ways to start hearing and understanding God’s voice:
#1. Live in proper alignment.
The Holy Spirit lives within you – You have to remember that, believe that and ACT LIKE IT!
- What do you do when you first wake up?
- How about right before bed?
- What do you spend your time doing and saying?
- Crappy TV isn’t going to help.
- Hanging out in places that are counter-productive toward Christianity isn't going to help.
#2. Start listening.
Intentionally schedule time to sit and listen to God. The bible speaks a lot about being quiet before God.How can we do this?
- Avoid distraction.
- Stop doing all of the talking.
- Get quiet.
- Walk with God. Be communicating with Him all day.
- The bible says to pray continuously.
Many of us talk to God in the morning, during our quiet time and before bed. It should be more than that. The Bible tells us that if we wait on God, we will encounter Him.

Listening is a skill that takes time to master. Start with a small amount of time today, and increase it every day. You'll become a great listener before you know it!
#3. Learn to recognize God’s voice
What does the voice of God sound like? The Bible has a lot to say on this topic, but there is one story that has always stood out to me that I want to share in this post.
And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” Behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” - 1 Kings 19:11-13
Other ways to identify God's voice:
- God’s voice lines up with his Word. Meaning, he’s not going to condemn.
- He’s not going to speak anything hateful or mean. (That’s another voice inside of your head.)
- Don't expect answers to your life's biggest questions. (You don't always need the answers you think you need.)
Be on the lookout for another episode on the first Monday of every month. Until then, remember that hearing and understanding the voice of God begins when we intentionally seek to listen for His voice.
