Miracles in the Mess and Blessing in the Brokenness

Being raised in a broken home affords you certain perspectives about the Good News of Jesus. Visiting two sides of the family separately always reminded me that things were not as they should be. It was painful every year. But more importantly every year I am surrounded by love. Wonderful meals, lots of gifts, and piles of shredded wrapping paper to throw away. Candy canes and cordial cherries!

For some of us, this Christmas will be a stark reminder that we have lost a loved one this year, and this is the first holiday we have had without them. For some, this will be the best Christmas we have ever had with our families. And there will be every mix of brokenness and blessing in between. This is a perfect picture of the first Christmas.

Almighty God condescends in the most beautiful way right into this broken world; right into the mess. The Salvation of the world, born into poverty placed in a feeding trough in a barn. God is with us now, and everything has changed.

Here in America, everybody knows that Christmas story. They know the story of Jesus’ birth. Millions of people are surrounded by the message of the incarnation of Almighty God.  At the same time, they are walking into the next year still dead in their sins. Walking into the next year without the hope of Salvation and eternal life.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” - Luke 2:10-11

The Good News is for ALL the people.

Not just the religious people, not just the believers but for all the people. This Christmas we have an amazing opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus. As followers of Jesus, may we be willing to love the unlovable and to have conversations to help the ones we love to discover or deepen their relationship with Emmanuel, the God who IS with us.
