Question About Identity: Do You Know Who You Really Are?

This world will invite you to conform to an identity that is not your own. We are bombarded with inane madness every day, thousand times over. Our senses are consumed with messages from every media we connect with, whether on the web, in print, on television, or on the radio.  Advertisements and marketing have designed our needs and want for us by leading us to the ever-moving target of “happiness” or, better yet, comfort.Image, popular culture, trendiness, fashion, and media; are ever-moving targets that are not anchored in truth and never give you an identity that will weather the high and lows of life. If you achieve the pinnacle, the pressure to maintain such a lifestyle may be crushing, the cost to get there too great, all to find that it is empty. Do not build your life on vanity. Are we a people building our house on the sands?

Once a lie is said often enough, it is thought to be the truth and it becomes part of our identity.

As we reflect on the year passed, let us dig deep. What lies do we believe? Who are we trying to be? Are we trying to be who society is telling us to be? Who our parents tell us to be?  Who are you modeling your life after? Have you examined your failures and successes? What were your motives? What can you learn? Where is your heart still holding onto grudges? Do you still have habits you have not defeated? Are there patterns that are still getting the best of you? What can you do differently in the days ahead to not wake up one year from today and be answering these questions the same?

One of the saddest comments that spoken in our lives,” Time passed. Nothing changed.” Have you given up on the dream in your heart? Are you true to who you are? The day of reckoning is the scariest and most liberating day you’ll ever have. One of my mentors calls it “having the courage to identify your reality.”  For our discussion here, we might say, “Have the courage to realize your true identity.”

The truth is many of us have shaped our lives by buying the lies of a crooked culture.

Admitting that I had indeed been chasing after all the things this world has to offer was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. That was the day I began to seek the truth.  I began to search for who I truly was. I began to search for who God said I was.God’s answers are not the World’s answers. His ways are not our ways. Happiness and comfort are not the points of life. Those are lies. Awesome if you have them. Be oh so thankful. But those things make terrible masters. Apart from God, satisfaction is impossible.  He says something very different about you. In God, what is available is beyond what the world could ever give you.

You are A Child of God, a son or daughter of The King.

You are a Co-Heir with Jesus Christ, and you have legal rights to the same inheritance as the Savior of the World. Made to be co-laborers with Christ in the redemption of this world, you are a friend of Jesus, and you are a saint. You are forgiven, and redemption is yours—the precious blood of Jesus given for you. You are worth dying for, worth fighting for and filled with the Holy Spirit of God, and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.I pray this coming year finds you building your house on The Rock.
