Gaining Margin in a Marginless Situation
We all need margin. When we don’t have margin, we aren’t functioning at our God-given best. This is a primary tenant in scripture whether it relates to work, money, relationships, etc.
Exodus 34:21 - Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. (ESV)Ecclesiastes 11:2 - Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. (ESV)
What happens though when it feels like we don’t have access to margin? What happens when it feels like the walls are closing in around us, and we don’t know what to do other than scream?
The Struggle is Real
Perhaps we’re in an romantic relationship with someone who is way too restrictive on our choices. They limit our freedoms at home, monitor where we go when we’re away from home, and nitpick every dime we spend. They make us feel like we're in a prison.

On the other hand, maybe we’re in a work environment that’s not only toxic, but it consumes most of our time too. A work week of 70 hours is commonplace, and “take-home work” is just as common.Whatever margin malady we may currently be in, there has to be a way out, right?
Seek God in Prayer
The solution is prayer. Now yes, prayer isn’t usually seen as very active. But that’s where our assumptions get the best of us and make us look silly. Prayer isn’t passive. It’s one of the most active tools we have as followers of Christ. When it feels like we can’t take one more step, prayer is our stalwart. It is our connection to the Comforter. Instead of an after-thought, it should be our very first thought.
Jeremiah 31:25 - For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish. (ESV)
Through prayer in Jesus’ name, we can be relieved. Likewise, our wells can be completely replenished. Further still, we can gain margin in marginless situations.
