Got Your Ticket to Eternity, Now What?

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year as far as travel goes. My family and I did some traveling as well and it was a trip we had to plan way ahead of time. When we did get our plane tickets we simply took our minds off the trip, waited till a few days before the trip to finalize some details, and then showed up at the airport. The Christian walk is not set up that way though. We simply don’t just get our ticket to eternity with Christ and wait for His return.

He has called us to more as we wait for Him.

It is quite easy to settle into a comfortable life (especially in the West) after we make the confession of faith. You’ve got your ticket now what? Get a 9 to 5 job, get married, save for retirement, and attend church weekly. Maybe squeeze in a couple of bible studies. Is there more?

In Matthew 25 starting verse 14 Jesus goes on to describe what the Kingdom of God is like.

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey

If you read on you see that the first two servants double what they were given respectively, while the last one chose to bury his. When the man returned he rewarded those who invested the gold well and confronted the one who did nothing with his.

In a similar fashion, God has blessed us

God has blessed us with our own gold - talents (gifts/strengths), time, and treasures (money/possessions). One day we will also give an account of how we have used these. This may not be the first time you may have heard such a message. But, I will challenge you to consider how you are doing as a steward of these blessings in your various roles within

• Family
• Church
• Community
• Vocation (school and work)

What does it look like to make God the center in all these roles and seek His glory? How do I use the wealth He entrusted to me (talent, time, and treasure) to be faithful in all these areas?

Take time to reflect on the different roles and positions God has you today. How are you doing with what He has given you? Hopefully, one or two things jump out to you that you can do differently or better. Make note of these things and talk to someone you trust about these impressions. Then take some concrete steps to act on those. May we be found faithful when He returns not simply waiting with our ticket in hand.
