How to Find Your Eve [A Biblical Perspective on Finding a Spouse]
Happy early Valentine's Day, or Singles Awareness Day, or whatever holiday you choose to celebrate today. When I found out that I had the honor of writing for this day, God reminded me of one of the simplest messages He has ever given me about relationships and finding the one for you. Let's start from the beginning...of humankind at least.
Genesis Chapter 2
Verse 7,15,18-22: Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being...15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it...18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” 19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
The simplest message that God has ever given me came from the first-ever interaction between man and woman. But it starts before woman is even created.
God created man in his own image (Genesis 1:27). God knew Adam as if they were one...because they pretty much were. Adam knew God and God knew Adam; they spoke directly to each other. But like each of us, God created Adam for a purpose. He created Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden to care for the land and everything else He created. God had Adam name every living being on Earth in search of a suitable helper for Adam.It wasn't until after all this that God decided to create Eve. Adam knew nothing other than life with God. He didn't know that there was even an option of woman. I imagine Adam was perfectly happy with just he and God. But God knew better. He saw that Adam needed help, and only God knew exactly what he needed.It's effortless for us to believe that we know what we need, but God knows better than us as to what we need in a partner. He knows us better than we know ourselves, and He knows exactly WHEN we need it as well.Instead of being focused on finding a partner, we should follow Adam's lead and focus on God and trust that He knows what you need and when you need it. Focus on the present and the task at hand. Through that task, God will bless you.
- Know God - God and Adam were one.
- Obey God - Adam named all the animals and took care of the Garden without a second thought.
- Trust God - Adam trusted that God knew what was best.
It was only after this that Adam was blessed with Eve.
If you are looking for your "Eve" this Valentine's Day...stop looking.
