How To Live A Blessed Life

I look at my own life, and by society’s standards, I don’t have much. Yet, when I examine my life under a microscope with God sized magnification, I find that I am immensely blessed. How am I so blessed, when I am so unworthy? Because God is gracious, and He is in the business of blessing all that love Him.  We all have a great capacity to be close to God, and receive his blessings in our life.

Join me, and let’s break down how blessings work, and what we can do to have more blessings bestowed unto us.

  1. We must have a relationship with God. I would be remiss if I did not say this, in order to receive the blessings of God; we must first have a genuine relationship with Him – live to serve Him, and not the enemy. God is the way to true life and happiness (the biggest blessing we can receive), and all other blessings flow through Him.
  1. We must tithe and bless others with our finances. This is by far the most important act we can make, besides accepting Jesus, to live a fulfilled life. Last week, a good friend commented “Stuart, I don’t even need to ask if you tithe, I can see the blessings in your life.” If I’m honest, it was kind of a gut check for me – God is constantly blessing my life financially, and it all starts with tithing, and then over and above offering.

  1. We must bless others with our blessings. God loves a good investment! In the parable of talents (found here), a man gives each of his three servants talents (money), proportional to their abilities (keep this in mind for the next bullet point). One of the servants simply buries his talents, probably thinking in fear that he would blunder them, and his master returns to scold him for it. When God blesses us, He expects us to bless others! God blessed me with a truck so I could use it to help others move, or take others shooting. God blessed me with land not so I could go hunt by myself, but so I could give others the opportunity to hunt, and to build friendships that last a lifetime. In order to be blessed, we must invest our blessings into others!

  1. We must constantly improve our abilities. Remember the parable of the talents, and how the man gave each servant talents according to his abilities? It is no surprise that the servant that squandered his talents was only blessed with one talent. The other two servants were given five and two talents – a far greater investment. In other words, the servant with lesser abilities was given less to begin with! We must always be honing our talents and abilities, becoming masters in our skills, and using our skills to bless others. As we become experts of our profession, God will increase his blessing (or investment) in us and we will inherit a blessed life.

How do we live a blessed life?

I’m noticing a theme as I write this – much of it has to do with how we treat others. The bible is packed with verses of Jesus telling us to love our neighbors. So it should come as no surprise that God likes to bless those who love others. That is all He asks of us. We don’t have to be supermen or superwomen, we simply have to sell out to Jesus. And then we have to sell out to living a God-centric lifestyle. Then we are blessed beyond measure, regardless of whether or not we deserve it.
