Spiritual Amnesia
A few weeks back I was driving to the beach along a road that was impacted by Hurricane Matthew in October. It struck me that there were still downed trees lining the road so long after a storm. They were not blocking the road but they had not been removed either. When I saw them and was reminded of the storm that did massive damage to many homes and businesses in the area, I thought about how interesting it was that something that impactful had happened so recently and it seemed as though I had already forgotten about it. The only reason I remembered was because I saw evidence of the storm still on my path.

This made me think about how I can sometimes have spiritual amnesia just like I couldn’t remember the storm unless the effects of it were placed right in front of me.When I’m in the day-to-day grind of life, I can forget how much I’ve been blessed and what God has brought me through.Ultimately it’s the blessings and favor God has given us that allow us to rest solely in His goodness and trust in complete faith that He is Lord.
“The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.” –Hebrews 11:1-2 MSG
So how do we make our faith the firm foundation in our life? We should avoid spiritual amnesia and frequently take inventory of where God has worked in our lives. It may be something as simple as getting another day to walk this earth or something as big as healing for an illness or reconciliation of a broken relationship.Whatever it is, you have evidence along your path of God’s goodness that will sustain your faith as you go through life, especially through the hurricanes that come your way.
