How to Hear The Voice of God (Not Morgan Freeman)

Anytime people mention hearing the Voice of God, I instantly imagine Morgan Freeman from Bruce Almighty speaking down from a pristine white room in a booming voice. I can hear it in my head as I type this!Isn't it funny how the media always attaches a "voice" to the voice of God that we can't get out of our heads - yet the sound of the actual voice of the One who spoke us into existence is so easily forgotten?

"Through faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen." - Hebrews 11:3

I hear from God audibly. All the time. And usually, when I mention that to people, the assumption is that it's a loud sound that always delivers an incredibly spiritual message. But the truth is, it is never a loud sound and hardly ever over-spiritual.

Instead, God chooses to speak to me in the ways He knows I will listen.

When my husband and I started dating, one of the first topics we discussed was each other's love languages. He asked me what mine was to know how to love me best and communicate with me. This concept has been widely accepted and praised by our culture. And the fact is, it works. But what makes us think that the Author of our lives wouldn't know our love languages as well? And don't you think He would use the love language of our spirit to speak to us? To love us?

My love language is Quality Time. I am the happiest girl in the world when I am sitting in a room with the people I love the most, just being with each other. I find it so beautiful that God ministers to that unique need in my life through a relationship with Him. I hear Him speak when I am simply sitting in my bed and meditating on His goodness. His voice calls to me during a solitude walk on the beach through a roaring, raging ocean that He is ever in control. He whispers that He loves me when I come home from a long day and my dogs curl up in my lap to just rest.

God knows you, and He loves you, and He MADE you.

He knows how to speak to your spirit so delicately and intimately that it would overwhelm you to understand fully. He knows your spiritual love language! Lean into His presence. Open your eyes to the world around you. Make it a habit to recognize His breath in the rustling of leaves or the colors in the sunset. Think about what delights you and gives you joy, and then seek God in that. He runs and meets you where you are with open arms and a tone that will minister to your spirit.

"What is the price of five sparrows-- two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows." - Luke 12:6-7

God desires to spend time with you -- and in that time, He WILL speak. Just be sensitive to how He is speaking to you. It will probably sound different than others, but that's okay. He knows each hair on your head, so be confident that He also knows how to communicate with you.
