Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God

 King David was a very successful military leader. He won numerous battles, and in several of those battles the odds were stacked against him. He was blessed with immense wealth and prosperity. His success has to lead us to ask the question, “what was his secret?” He gives us a pretty strong indication of the answer to this question in Psalm 20 verse 7 when David writes, “Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.David was given the title, “A man after God’s own heart.” I think we gain further understanding as to why he was given this title when we read the above verse. David dared to trust God, even in the most desperate of circumstances. If most of us, myself included, were faced with some of the situations David had to face, we would most likely resort to our own strength rather than standing on God’s promises.Take the incident when David slays Goliath, for example. Every other man in that army saw Goliath, and determined whether or not they could defeat him based on their own strengths and abilities. The looked on this giant of a man, in all his strength and military experience, and then they compared that to their own size, strength and military experience. Via this type of assessment, they came to the obvious conclusion that they could not defeat him.David, on the other hand, viewed this situation a little differently. He saw Goliath the same way all the other men did, but David didn’t assess his own strengths and abilities to determine whether or not he could defeat Goliath. David looked upon his almighty God, and how much bigger He was than Goliath. When David viewed the battle this way, victory was inevitable.I wonder how many of us are facing situations at this very moment that we are evaluating based on our own strengths and abilities. Are we facing a difficult project at work and thinking, I don’t have the talent, ability or resources to be successful? Is God calling us to step into a leadership role within our church, or to witness to a friend, and we are thinking things like, “I don’t speak well, and I have no idea what I would say?” It is so easy to forget that we serve a God who spoke the earth into existence. We serve a God who is infinitely bigger than any challenge that we are facing. Better yet, that same God tells us that He is with us ALWAYS and He will never leave us nor forsake us!No matter what Goliath you might be facing in your life right now, I urge you not to look at the strength of your arm, you past successes or failures, or the power of the sling in your hand. Instead, let the size of the Great, Mighty and Loving God we serve be the determining factor in whether or not you decide to march forward to a victory that brings Him greater glory! Let the promises He has spoken over your life be the fuel that pushes you on, as the Great Encourager reminds you that you are more than an overcomer in Christ Jesus, and you can do ALL things through Christ who gives you strength!
