What is Your Ultimate Purpose?
According to popular psychology, once your basic human needs are met, it’s not going to be long before you find yourself exploring the age old question: why am I here? We have an innate desire wired into our core to make a difference, given to us by our Heavenly Dad long before the world was ever spoken into existence.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
You are God’s work of art, His precious creation and there is a plan and a purpose for your life. The big question we often find ourselves getting stuck on is … what’s my purpose? Or, as Josh & Lisa invited us to consider in a recent episode of the podcast, how do we live called?
If you’ve ever found yourself getting lost in the weeds of what I like to call “thing finding”, today’s blog post is for you.
It’s easy to fall for the lie that once we “pray the prayer”, the hard work is done. Yes, your eternity is secure but what if Jesus died on the cross to give you so much more than simply a “get out of hell free” card?
“A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul.” Charles Spurgeon
What if we took Jesus at his word, embraced our identities as sons and daughters of the King, a royal priesthood, and did even greater signs and wonders than Jesus did during his three years walking the planet?
What if living life as a follower of Jesus has so much more to offer than many of us grew up being taught?
I “prayed the prayer” when I was 12 or 13 when a staunch Welsh preacher scared me out of hell. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I was loved into heaven after being introduced to a God who loved me, just the way I was, quirks and foibles and eccentricities and all.
Fast forward a few years and, with all my basic human needs being met, I fell into the trap of “thing finding”, spending months going round in circles agonizing over the purpose for my life. It all came to a head when I finally gave up trying to figure out my “thing” and instead simply embraced who I was created to be.
Little did I know then that God was setting me up, leading me gently into His best for me and the people around me.
Because whilst we all have a call on our lives, your ultimate purpose is to live out your identity as God’s child and to do so in active, daily relationship with Him. When you do that, it’s easy for Him to show up and share more of the specifics He has in mind for your day to day life.
“Live called”, moment by moment, day by day, hearing God’s heart, and you give Him space to share His vision with you. It really doesn’t need to be complicated and the more you expect God to communicate with you, the easier it becomes to hear Him.
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.” 2 Timothy 1:19
Over the course of the next few months here at The Good Christian Company, we’re going to be digging deeper into the specifics of what it means to “live called” and I’m excited for the journey we’re going to take together.
It really is as simple as you being you, the person God created you to be, in intentional, expectant, relationship with Him, what I like to call “Youier” and if you’ve never really expected to hear God speak to you, it can start with a simple question: God, what’s on your heart right now?
Nearly three decades after first “praying the prayer”, Holy Spirit and I wrote a little book, full of great questions to explore with God. As a gift to you as you explore the journey of “living called” with us here at The Good Christian Company, you’re invited to download an e-copy of that little book to help you get started.
My prayer for you as you explore with Father, Son and Holy Spirit (or as I often refer to them, Papa, Jesus and Sam - yes, the story of the time Holy Spirit said, “you can call me Sam” is included!) is that your heart may be opened to fresh, new conversations with God, expecting to hear His heart and knowing just how loved you really are.
