Living A Proverbs 3:5-6 Life

Are you currently living a Proverbs 3:5-6 life?  Can you recite Proverbs 3:5-6?  Do you know what that verse looks like in the real world?  A couple weeks ago I found myself asking these questions and if I am being completely honest with you I could only answer one;

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)Trust in the Lord with all your heart,And lean not on your own understanding;In all your ways acknowledge Him,And He shall direct your paths.

You may or may not have heard in the news recently that the wife of Oklahoma City Thunder’s assistant coach Monty Williams, tragically passed away earlier this month.  Ingrid passed away from a car accident in which the car that struck her and her three kids was going 92 mph in a 40 mph zone.  The three children survived but with serious injuries.At the Eulogy, Monty gave an inspirational message conveying that everything will work out.  That is impressive!  A week after his wife passed away and his three children were seriously hurt Monty quoted Romans 8:28 with authority;

Romans 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (NKJV)

How does Monty know that everything will be alright?  Because he has been here before.  Back in 1990 Monty was offered a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Notre Dame.  During his freshman year he was told that he could no longer play the game he loved so much because of a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  When he spoke to Ingrid, his then girlfriend, she looked him right in the eyes and said, “Jesus can heal your heart.”And Jesus did just that.  A short while later Monty went back into the hospital to undergo additional testing and he was cleared to play basketball again.  Monty went on to be drafted in the NBA and later became the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans.Everything was going right for Monty and his family again. He was the head coach in New Orleans which had made it to the playoffs with a young team and looked to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.  However, after their playoff run had ended, Monty was fired from his head coaching position.  Do you think Monty was down and in the dumps?  No, he had been here before.  In an interview with a New Orleans news station Monty was quoting Romans 8:28 once again.  Monty trusts the lord with all his heart, even when it doesn’t make sense.So when I heard Monty giving his Eulogy speech and listening to his testimony I realized that I had the answer to my question, “Do I know what that verse looks like in the real world?”  Through all the adversity Monty had trusted in the Lord with all his heart and didn’t try to fully understand it himself.  He acknowledged where his strength came from and knows that God has more in store for him.  This is what living a Proverbs 3:5-6 life is and I pray that my/your life will prove the same.
