Would Jesus Vote in this Presidential Election? And Should I?
Would Jesus vote? Due to the upcoming presidential election this is a very popular question right now! This question came to my mind after reading a post on this blog last week titled A Christian’s Perspective On The Presidential Election. I was in a conversation with a friend recently and we were discussing this. 'If Jesus was a citizen of the USA, would He vote?' This friend I was talking with is the co-host of a quickly growing political podcast. He is highly influential, so I really wanted to hear his opinion on the question. We talked about why Jesus would vote, and also why He would not vote. At the end of the conversation, I came up with my decision that I believe YES Jesus would vote if He was a citizen of the USA in today's world.
Why do I believe this?
I believe that He would vote based on how He followed the rules and laws of his time. One of my main scripture references is Matthew 22:15-22 Jesus says "Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s" - He said this in regards to the imperial tax of that time. This tax had nothing to do with His ministry, yet Jesus followed the laws placed by the governing authorities. Romans 13:1 says "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." (However, it is fully up to us to decide who these leaders are.)
Should Americans Vote?
I have a very popular post on this blog titled 'Remember Your Freedom'. I strongly encourage you to read it. One of my main points was this: 'The freedom you live in today once cost someone their life. They believed that their death was worth your freedom.' The USA was founded on Christian principles. This country and its political foundation are based on God's word. Ultimately the ability to vote came from God. It is our duty as believers and as US citizens to vote. That is our freedom as Americans and you 100% should and need to vote.
Should Christians Vote?
In regards to voting from a biblical perspective; a wise mentor of mine brought Genesis 1:28 to my attention. "God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”" Notice that this verse is full of action words. God is in control, yet He has given humanity management over the earth. It is our job to steward it well.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
In the Old Testament, Joshua didn’t take possession of the Promised Land by sitting on the side lines and waiting for God to place the land in front of him. God did tell Joshua that the land belonged to him and his people, however, Joshua had to take it; not just sit and wait for something to happen.
Would Jesus vote in this presidential election? And should I? Yes and Yes! I believe that Jesus would vote, and that it is fully our duty and responsibility both as Christian's and as American's to vote as well. I write this post humbly and my prayer is that it encourages someone out there to vote!
In ending this post, I want to pass you over to a page that we've set up here on DailyPS: 'How Christians Should Navigate the 2020 Election' I trust that it will serve you well during this political time that we're living in!
