3 Biblical Steps for Developing a Mindset of Thankfulness

Developing a mindset of thankfulness has become a major focus in my life over the past few years. It's been a journey that has helped me grow tremendously! Here are a few key ways that this mindset of thankfulness has changed my life:

  • Decreased stress levels.
  • Improved overall happiness.
  • Increased energy and physical health
  • Expanded level of influence.
  • Overall improved Spiritual health and maturity.

As we enter the week of Thanksgiving, in what has been a particularly challenging year for most people, we need a reminder to be thankful. Between COVID-19 and the Presidential Election, we need a change of pace! This is a great week for that change.I want to share my journey with you. I believe that it is very practical and simple to understand. Let's start with the foundational scripture that I have focused on to help me develop a mindset of thankfulness.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

3 biblical steps for developing a mindset of thankfulness

1. Rejoice always

Start your day with rejoicing! Think about all that God has done for you in life and what He has blessed you with. I'm not talking about materialistic or temporary things. Think bigger! When was the last time you were joyful for life itself? You woke up this morning that is a great reason to be joyful! Be joyful for Jesus' sacrifice that enabled us to have free communication to God. Always remember to express joy for life itself!

2. Pray continually

Prayer is how we communicate and grow in relationship with God. If you are in a relationship, you do more than just talk to that other person on a scheduled basis or when you have a need. There is constant/spontaneous conversation. God wants our relationship with Him to be the same way. You will find that as you develop the mindset that you are "walking with God" and conversing with Him throughout your day, that joy will become a more regular part of your life! Praying continually is a lifestyle.

3. Give thanks in all circumstances

Being thankful through every season of life will only happen when we have the correct mindset of who God is. We need to understand that everything happens for a reason and is part of God's bigger plan. Romans 8:28 tells us that God works all things out for the good of those who love Him. We need to come to a place where we view God as bigger than the circumstances we face. Find something, even if it is something small to be thankful for every day!

Applying this passage of scripture to our lives is not necessarily easy, but it is simple.

One simple thing we can all do is set calendar events in our phone's at various times throughout the day to remind us to rejoice, pray and give thanks. I did this for a while until it started becoming naturally part of who I am. When you get into stressful or difficult situation, stop, pray and listen for a moment. Thank God for helping you get through it before you even begin. My prayer today is that these 3 steps above encourage and motivate you to take action toward gaining a greater mindset of thankfulness. Always be full of joy, pray continually and give thanks no matter what is going on. I believe that this is the way that God wants us to live our lives. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
